Album of the Decade: Radiohead – Kid A

This was always going to be a tough choice considering there has been some fantastic albums in the past 10 years (2000 – 2009) but ultimately it came down to two Radiohead albums, how to choose between ‘Kid A’ and ‘In Rainbows’ was always going to be difficult. Hence why this post has come in mid February, but ‘Kid A’ is the album of the decade.

Seeing Radiohead three or four years ago at V Festival (I know, I know) was a musical experience never to be forgotten and certainly changed music for me. It was ‘In Rainbows’ that truly got me obsessed with Thom Yorke and co, but going through the back catalogue it was always ‘Kid A’ that stood out for me.

Not a particularly controversial choice for Album of the Decade, ‘Kid A’ was at the time critically acclaimed and many Radiohead fans still claim it to be their best work. ‘Kid A’ has the perfect blend of pop, experiment and overall it is a sombre album which truly will be regarded as a classic album in many years to come.

There is not a weak point on the album and every song flows into the other, lyrically and vocally Thom is at his peak and to me it is music at its definitive best. ‘Idioteque’ happens to be my favourite Radiohead song and the lyrics are haunting yet instantly memorable. ‘Optimistic’, ‘How To Disappear Completely’, ‘The National Anthem’ and ‘Everything In Its Right Place’ are further proof that this album is filled with some of the greatest songs ever written.

Overlooked songs such as ‘Kid A’, ‘In Limbo’ and ‘Morning Bell’ are equally as fantastic as the already mentioned tracks, and you begin to realise why so many people regard this as one of the greatest albums of all time, let alone the past decade.
