Band of the Decade: Radiohead

This was an easy choice as my two favourite albums of the past decade were Radiohead albums (‘In Rainbows’ and ‘Kid A’). They also happened to have put on one of the best live shows in my lifetime (at V Festival), and have also released two other pretty bloody good albums in ‘Amnesiac’ and ‘Hail to the Thief’.

‘In Rainbows’ was a fantastic record after a four absence from previous album ‘Hail to the Thief’ and they also self released the album at the time. Everyone will remember them giving it away for as much as the fan wanted to pay for it. A bold move perhaps? Probably not considering the size of the band but all the same it was quite the statement from Radiohead. ‘In Rainbows’ really changed the way many listened to Radiohead and it is a fantastic album and proved that Thom Yorke and co are no has-beens. Songs like ‘Reckoner’, ’15 Steps’, ‘Jigsaw Falling Into Place’, ‘All I Need’, ‘Nude’, ‘Weird Fishes/Arpeggi’ and so on prove that.

‘Amnesiac’ and ‘Hail to the Thief’ for me are not in the same league as the two previously mentioned albums, but they are still fantastic records. Especially ‘Hail to the Thief’ which boasts such brilliant songs such as ‘2 + 2 = 5’, ‘There There’, and ‘Where I End And You Begin’. Where as ‘Amnesiac’ has such classics like ‘Knives Out’, ‘Pyramid Song’ and ‘I Might Be Wrong’.

Finally, ‘Kid A’ which needs no further superlatives just that it is one of the finest albums to be ever made. Radiohead for me have been the most important band of my generation and the most innovative band and for that I’d consider them the band of the decade.
