Film of the Decade: Donnie Darko

Richard Kelly who has since gone onto such failures like The Box (2009) and Southland Tales (2007) in 2001 released Donnie Darko. The said film stars Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal along with Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze and a very young Seth Rogen.

Film of the decade, it could be a controversial choice, films like American Psycho (2000), There Will Be Blood (2007) and No Country For Old Men (2007) were all incredibly close. Donnie Darko is one of those rare films that I can watch repeatedly and it still feels as fresh as when I was a fourteen year old teenager.

Admittedly the first time I watched it I was perplexed with it, but that was what I liked so much. It was only when I watched it for the second time (that very same day too) that I realised how great it was. I mean the cinematography is beautiful, the acting is great (Barrymore and Swayze are top notch) the soundtrack is unbelievably good.

Donnie makes the film though, his character is just so powerful and one that will be remembered in film history for many years to come I suspect. For me it tops any other film I saw in the past decade and it is a film that I remember most from my youth.

“Why do you wear that stupid bunny suit?”
“Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?”

Absolutely incredible.
