4. Japandroids – Post-Nothing

This album took me completely by surprise in the sense that I wasn’t expecting it, I had not heard much about the band, if anything before listening to it. And wow, it truly blew me away. You’d be hard pressed to find it in many critics or bloggers top ten for the year but I simply cannot keep it out of mine.

I guess it is nothing original or innovative but it is the type of album that makes me want to pick up a guitar and make some serious noise. Within the noise of Post-Nothing there is some fantastic melodies and beautiful lyrics, none more so than the final track ‘I Quit Girls’ which includes the wonderful line “She wears white, six days a week. She was just, one of those girls. And if you’re lucky, on the seventh day, she’ll wear nothing.”

Simple but at the same time it works incredibly well to the sheer noise that Japandroids make. Every song is just flawless and what strikes me most is the tight drumming and how prominent the drums sound on the record. ‘Wet Hair’ another example of just how good you can make a song sound with effective drumming and loud guitars, added with some provocative lyrics like, “We run the convent, must get to France. So we can french-kiss some French girls.”

Other songs like ‘Crazy/Forever’, ‘Rockers East Vancouver’, ‘Young Hearts Spark Fire’ and ‘Sovereignty’ make this album a really terrific listen. Post-Nothing is an album that deserves to be listened to at the loudest you can possibly get it, so do it that justice.
